Spring Slam 2009 Wrap Up PDF Print E-mail

On April 24, the Christian Student Center's (CSC) fifth annual Spring Slam celebration took place. Like the past four Spring Slams, the event was centered on the volleyball tournament. Unlike the previous four, this year's event was arguably the biggest and best. Students from the CSC were encouraged to form teams and reach out to classmates and others that they knew from the University. By the time Friday came around a total of sixteen teams of six players, plus stand-ins, were registered to face off at the net. The teams were made up of players of all levels of skill, ethnic backgrounds, and levels of competitiveness. Sixteen teams began in the tournament all seeking the glory of Spring Slam Champion, but only one team took the title.

The afternoon of games began at around four o' clock. From the very beginning the competitive heat was on high, as was the weather. The sun shone upon Johnson field with an unrelenting burst of spring season rays. The players were able to find sustenance and revitalize their bodies with a delicious meal of barbeque provided by the CSC's Garrett Schmille. The tournament was made complete with an almost continuous accompaniment of music, compliments of a local radio station and two stellar local bands.  Needless to say, everything came together to create the perfect spring volleyball tournament.

The teams battled it out on the grass and with time came the narrowing of teams. Come nightfall, in the absence of the sun's rays the stadium lights on the field served to illuminate the last games that would decide the victor. It all boiled down to a final dual between team Civil-ians and team Shake and Bake. In spite of exhaustion and prolonged exposure to the elements both teams gave it their best; however team Shake and Bake's best happened to be better. At the end of the night they left with the title of the fifth annual Spring Slam Champions. Although defeated in the heat of battle, team Civil-ians left that night knowing they had at least left their mark on the field as those who dared to compete with the dreaded Shake and Bake. Also, a player from each team was awarded with an MVP gift and both teams received a gift certificate to Dion's for their valiant volleying skills.

All in all, this year's Slam celebration was a unanimous success made possible by the efforts of all involved.
